To get approved for Social Security Disability benefits, your impairment must be formally diagnosed by a doctor. While you can still apply for disability now if an impairment is preventing you from working, however, you should try to obtain a formal diagnosis for your primary disabling medical condition as quickly as possible.
To be approved for Social Security Disability benefits, the law requires that your disabling medical condition must be so ”severe” that it prevents you from engaging in “substantial gainful activity” for at least 12 consecutive months.
Based on your response, it appears that your condition is expected to improve within 12 months. As such, you may wish to explore short-term disability or long-term disability with your previous employer.
If there are any complications that arise during your treatment or if your condition declines, you may become eligible for Social Security Disability. Please do not hesitate to contact us in the future if you feel your medical condition has lasted or is expected to last for 12 consecutive months preventing you from working.
