When a disability claim is approved by SSA, the claimant will receive their retroactive benefits in a ‘lump sum‘ award, in addition to monthly payments for as long as they remain disabled, up to age 67. 

When a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) claim is approved, the claimant will receive Medicare insurance benefits two years from their “date of entitlement”. SSI only claimants receive Medicaid insurance.

Not only does the claimant receive disability benefits when a claim is approved by SSA, eligible beneficiaries of the claimant also can collect benefits. This includes children in the household and widow benefits.
